David Van Asten is a seasoned illustrator, designer, and author whose creative journey spans continents and decades. Born in Barry, Wales, in 1951, David’s early years were shaped by a move to Australia, where his family settled at the Holmesglen Migrant Hostel in Victoria. He attended Jordanville Technical School in Melbourne before entering the workforce at just 16, gaining invaluable experience across a range of hands-on roles.
David’s passion for visual storytelling led him to the world of advertising, where he honed his skills at several agencies before joining Hallmark Cards Australia as Graphics Manager. There, he brought Australian and New Zealand culture to life through his distinctive greeting cards and calendars, earning recognition for his keen eye and creative flair.
A true multi-disciplinary artist, David authored and illustrated his first children’s book, Bushrangers, for Lamont Publishing—launching a prolific career that would see him create and illustrate over 35 beloved children’s books. His work is celebrated for its warmth, wit, and ability to engage young readers through both words and images.
After 17 years running his own successful retail business, David retired to focus on his lifelong passions. Today, he devotes his time to painting, exploring new artistic techniques, and cherishing moments with his grandchildren. David continues to inspire with his creativity, storytelling, and dedication to the craft of design.
